Wissenschaftler rätselten bislang über die Ursachen von Tsunamis im Mittelmeer, weder Seebeben noch vulkanische Tätigkeiten kamen für die Überschwemmungen als Ursache in Frage. Die Forscher um Vilibic entdeckten den Grund in der Atmosphäre.
Turbulenzen in der Luft, auch als Schluckauf der Atmosphäre bezeichnet, erzeugen eine Druckwelle, die sich auf Meereswellen auswirkt. Vor Küsten erfolgt eine Verstärkung durch rücklaufende Wellen und geologische Gegebenheiten: Ein Tsunami entsteht.
